Laser PRK provides correction for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Laser PRK utilizes a laser beam to reshape the surface of the cornea. A no power contact lens is placed on the cornea following the procedure to allow comfortable healing of the eye. The contact lenses are removed in 3-4 days after the surface of the cornea is healed. Most patients have 20/20 to 20/40 vision within 1-2 weeks. Eye drops are used following the procedure for 3-6 months to promote clear, comfortable vision. Generally both eyes are treated and patients can return to normal activities within 3-4 days. Laser PRK has been approved by the FDA since 1996. Initial FDA trials indicated a 90% correction for 20/40 vision or better with only one laser treatment. Most laser centers are reporting a 90-96% correction for 20/25 or better vision with enhancement procedures that are necessary in a small percentage of cases. Risks are minimal and comparable statistically to wearing contact lenses. Risks include over and under correction, corneal distortion, corneal haze, post-operative pain, discomfort, and vision fluctuation. Most of these risks are managed with laser re-treatment or eyedrops.
